Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Sunnyvale Owner’s Guide

Most Mighty Mule keypad and intercom repairs we handle in Sunnyvale run between $195 and $425 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a standalone wireless keypad, a wired intercom station, or the control board that ties both together. We stock the FM136, FM137, and FM138 series keypads plus the intercom modules for the SW2000, SW3000, and SW4000 series openers on our trucks, and we can usually diagnose and complete the repair in a single visit if you can tell us your operator model when you call. The failure usually announces itself gradually: a keypad that needs increasingly firm presses, an intercom that crackles then goes silent, or a gate that stops responding to entry codes entirely while the remote still works fine.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

Mighty Mule has used three distinct keypad and intercom architectures since 2010, and mixing them up is the most common compatibility mistake we see in Sunnyvale.

The FM136 wireless keypad pairs with the SW2000 and SW3000 series swing-gate operators and the SL2000 slide-gate opener. It runs on a 12-volt battery (not line voltage) and communicates via 433 MHz radio. The FM137 added backlit keys and extended range, but uses the same mounting footprint. The FM138 is the current hardwired keypad with direct low-voltage connection to the control board, found on newer SW4000 installations and retrofits where wireless reliability was spotty.

Intercoms fall into two camps: the older FM231 two-wire intercom that shares communication lines with the keypad circuit, and the current FM232 wireless intercom base station that pairs separately. Here’s the gotcha: the FM232 will not integrate with pre-2018 SW2000 control boards without a FM500 communication adapter, a $45 part that most big-box retailers don’t stock. We carry it.

OEM Mighty Mule keypads carry a two-year manufacturer warranty. We also install a commercial-grade aftermarket equivalent from Seco-Larm when the mounting location sees heavy sun exposure, which is most of Sunnyvale’s south- and west-facing driveways. The Seco-Larm unit uses UV-stabilized ABS housing that outlasts OEM plastic by roughly 40% in our local records.

To identify your part: the keypad model is stamped on a label inside the battery compartment (wireless) or on the rear housing (wired). The intercom base station label sits on the underside. If the label’s worn off, measure the mounting hole spacing. FM136/137 use 2.75-inch vertical centers. FM138 and Seco-Larm equivalents use 3.5-inch centers.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
  • Keys require harder presses each month. The silicone dome switches beneath the keypad membrane degrade with UV and temperature cycling. Sunnyvale’s 90-plus summer days and 40-degree winter nights accelerate this. Once a key needs two attempts, the domes are within weeks of total failure.
  • Intercom audio is present but the gate won’t release. This usually points to a failed relay on the intercom base station or corrosion at the two-wire terminal block. Moisture wicks into the FM231 through the bottom cable entry; we’ve found this on at least a dozen Lakewood Village installations where morning fog collects at low mounting heights.
  • Keypad works, intercom doesn’t, or vice versa. When only one function fails, the problem is rarely the outdoor station itself. More often it’s the control board’s accessory bus losing voltage, or a pinched wire where the low-voltage cable exits the operator housing. We test bus voltage before quoting any part replacement.
  • Gate opens with the remote but not with the keypad code. If the remote functions normally, the operator and receiver are healthy. The keypad’s radio or its stored code has drifted. On FM136 units, we can often reprogram without replacement. On FM137 and FM138, code corruption usually indicates internal memory failure and requires a new unit.
  • Keypad display is dim or shows partial segments. For wireless units, this is almost always battery voltage below 10.5 volts under load. For hardwired units, it indicates the 12-volt transformer inside the operator is sagging, which will soon affect limit-switch accuracy too. We test both the keypad and the supply voltage.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Repair Scenario Typical Range What’s Included
FM136/137 wireless keypad replacement $195 - $285 New keypad, battery, code programming, mounting hardware
FM138 hardwired keypad replacement $245 - $340 New keypad, low-voltage cable if needed, bus voltage test, code setup
FM231/FM232 intercom repair or replacement $265 - $425 Intercom base or handset, wiring inspection, relay test, range verification
Control board accessory bus repair $180 - $295 Board-level diagnosis, terminal cleaning or relay replacement, voltage documentation
FM500 communication adapter (when needed) $45 add-on Adapter, pairing, integration test with existing keypad

What moves the price: cable runs longer than 25 feet from operator to keypad, stucco or masonry mounting that requires anchors and sealant, and intercom units mounted above 6 feet where we need a second technician for safe ladder work. We don’t charge extra for Lakewood Village or any Sunnyvale neighborhood.

Every repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the keypad or intercom fails for any reason related to our work within one year, we replace it at no charge. Under Haven Standard Clause 1, you get the written price before we pick up a tool. Under Clause 4, you get a photo log of every connection, every voltage reading, and every setting we adjusted.

There’s safe troubleshooting and then there’s work that belongs on a ticket.

What you can check safely: Replace the keypad battery with a fresh alkaline (FM136/137 only, not lithium). Verify the keypad code hasn’t been accidentally changed by a houseguest. Check that the intercom volume hasn’t been turned down at the base station. Look for obvious wire damage where the low-voltage cable enters the operator housing.

Where DIY goes wrong: The control board inside a Mighty Mule operator carries line voltage even when the keypad circuit is low-voltage. Opening the operator housing without lockout procedure risks serious shock. More commonly, we find owners who replaced a keypad successfully but didn’t seal the cable entry with silicone, letting moisture destroy the new unit in three months. The FM138 hardwired keypad also requires correct polarity on the two-wire bus; reversed connections won’t blow a fuse, but they’ll cause intermittent operation that looks like a defective part.

We’re not affiliated with Mighty Mule. We’re an independent service provider with no incentive to sell you a brand you don’t need. If your operator is healthy and only the keypad or intercom failed, we repair the part. Name what you found. Name what it costs. Name what you left behind.
