We regularly service the 1800 series surface-mount keypads (1802, 1803, 1808), the 1810 series flush-mount units, the 1830 telephone entry systems, and the older 1200 series intercoms still mounted at gates in Sunnyvale’s older subdivisions near Lakewood Village.

To identify your unit, open the keypad housing and look for a white or silver label with a model number starting with the series digits. The 1802 and 1803 share the same mounting footprint but use different backlit membrane styles, the 1808 adds a larger display, and the 1830 series requires a two-conductor phone line run plus local power at 16-24 VAC. For intercoms, the 1200 series uses a two-wire station loop while newer 1800-series intercom modules communicate over the same low-voltage pair as the keypad controller.

Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

• Buttons register intermittently or not at all. The membrane switch layer beneath the keys degrades with moisture and UV exposure. In Sunnyvale’s dry summers followed by winter fog cycles, we’ve seen membranes crack at the flex points after six to eight years.
• Backlight works but no tone or relay click when a code is entered. This usually points to a failed main board or corrupted memory chip. The board still powers the LED driver but can’t process the entry or trigger the gate operator.
• Intercom call button pressed, but no ring inside the house or garbled audio. The speaker module or audio transformer is failing. On 1830 systems, we also check for corrosion at the phone-line punch-down block, which is common where the cable enters the housing from below.
• Keypad powers on, then resets or goes blank after a few seconds. The power supply board isn’t holding steady voltage under load. This can come from a failing transformer at the gate or from the keypad’s internal regulator overheating in direct sun.
• Gate opens with the remote but not with the keypad code. The operator and keypad are on different circuits. If the keypad still lights up, the problem is likely in the data line between keypad and operator, or the code memory has lost its programming due to a weak backup battery.

There’s no high-tension spring or lethal voltage inside a DoorKing keypad housing, but there are still ways to make the problem worse. A homeowner can safely check whether the keypad is receiving power at the terminal block, whether the phone line is seated firmly on a 1830 system, and whether the housing gasket is keeping fog out. What we don’t recommend: swapping the main board without understanding the operator’s relay logic, forcing a membrane onto mismatched standoffs, or running new cable without verifying conductor gauge against the distance to the power source.
